Tanning Accelerator vs Fake Tan: What's the Difference?

Tanning accelerator cream and fake tan are often grouped together, but they are different product types. If you are trying to work out which one fits your routine, start with what you want the product itself to do.

What is tanning accelerator cream?

A tanning accelerator is a topical cosmetic used as part of a tanning routine. It is not automatically a self-tan, bronzer or gradual tan. Always check the individual formula and label because products within the wider tanning category can contain different ingredients and have different purposes.

What is fake tan?

Fake tan and gradual tan are self-tanning products designed to create visible colour on the skin without needing that colour to come from a natural UV tan. Many self-tanners use DHA, although formulas vary by brand.

Accelerator, bronzer and self-tan are not interchangeable terms

A product described as an accelerator is not necessarily a bronzer. A bronzer is formulated to add or enhance visible colour, while a tingle product is a separate product style again. Read the product description rather than assuming every tanning cream works in the same way.

What about sun protection?

A tanning accelerator should never be treated as sunscreen. UV exposure from the sun and sunbeds can damage skin. For outdoor exposure, follow current NHS sun-safety advice, including appropriate sunscreen, shade and protective clothing. UKHSA also discourages the use of sunbeds for cosmetic tanning.
